DTEK Oil&Gas: On the Outcomes of Advanced Technology Implementation

In May, DTEK Oil&Gas announced the outcomes of work in several areas at once - a record for the company daily production rate, successful multi-stage fracturing, which made it possible to obtain gas inflow from tight formations, and creation of a virtual server to optimize field modeling. We offer to take a look at the outcomes of successful teamwork.

DTEK OIL&GAS REACHED A DAILY GAS PRODUCTION OF 5 MMCM

In May, DTEK Oil&Gas reached 5 MMCM of daily natural gas production. This figure was achieved for the first time in the history of the company and all private gas production in Ukraine.
It was possible due to the implementation of strategic infrastructure projects and deep drilling program with the commissioning of new high-flow wells at the Semirenkivskoe and Machukhskoe fields in 2019, measures to intensify the operating wells and introduce innovative technologies.
"Despite the unstable economic situation in the country and difficult conditions in the gas sector due to record low gas price, we are making every effort to increase natural gas production. The current figure is the result of the company's systematic technological development and high professionalism of every employee. This is a large contribution to the development of gas production in Ukraine in existing difficult conditions, " DTEK Oil&Gas CEO Igor Shchurov said.

DTEK OIL&GAS RECEIVED HYDROCARBON RECOVERY FROM TIGHT SANDSTONES AT A DEPTH OF MORE THAN 5 KM

DTEK Oil&Gas successfully completed multi-stage hydraulic fracturing using advanced technology. It helped obtain industrial inflow of gas and condensate and bring the well back to the production well stock. Thanks to this, the company proved the availability of hydrocarbon reserves in a horizon that was not previously developed industrially.

The feature was that hydraulic fracturing was carried out in a reservoir with low permeability at a depth of more than 5,000 m under high pressures and temperatures. The technology based on synthetic polymers that is commonly used in the world was applied to stimulate hard-to-recover reserves. It is characterized by the best residual permeability. Over 1,000 cubic meters of liquid was pumped into the reservoir under maximum wellhead pressures of about 1,000 atm. The work was carried out with the involvement of the largest hydraulic fracturing fleet in Ukraine with a total capacity of 25,000 hp.
The successful adaptation of hydraulic fracturing technology took place under the leadership of the DTEK Oil&Gas Technology Center.
“Considering a set of complex initial geological and technological factors, the comprehensive approach to the adaptation of advanced technologies introduced by DTEK Oil&Gas allowed the successful implementation of the hydraulic fracturing program. Employees of many DTEK Oil&Gas divisions, leading international and Ukrainian service companies and profile members of the permanent Expert Council were involved in hydraulic fracturing,” Maxim Dorokhov, head of the company's Technology Center, said.
Let us recall that in 2019 DTEK Oil&Gas established the Expert Council to facilitate the implementation of the world's best practices at the company. 13 international experts became the members of the Council.
Alexey Raptanov, Director for Hydrocarbon Production and Processing at DTEK Oil&Gas, noted: “The hydraulic fracturing program that has been implemented shows the possibility and effectiveness of such work at depths of more than 5,000 m under high pressures and temperatures. This will make it possible to develop new hard-to-recover reserves, which is strategically important today to increase gas production and achieve energy independence of Ukraine.”

DIGITAL GAS PRODUCTION: DTEK OIL&GAS CREATED VIRTUAL WORKSTATIONS

DTEK Oil&Gas implemented a project to create a virtual server - specialized graphic stations that significantly increase the efficiency and safety of the field modeling process.
The virtual server was created primarily for DTEK Oil&Gas geology and development specialists who build 3D models of fields using the Petrel software and work with data of more than hundreds of gigabytes.
The use of the virtual server largerly increases the level of interaction in the field modeling process. Specialists from different offices of the company, as well as external experts can now work on the same 3D project. Data can be accessed immediately from any computer, at any time, from any office. It is also possible to quickly share this information with colleagues without spending time on physical copying.
The technology also provides centralized data backup, which increases information security and minimizes the risk of data loss. The third advantage is higher speed of calculations and modeling of fields and, as a consequence, higher efficiency.
The project was implemented by DTEK's IT specialists together with DTEK Oil&Gas team. It used Hewlett Packard equipment and VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) VmWare Horizon technology. Denys Garkavyi, Head of DTEK's IT Infrastructure Department, also noted that when creating the virtual server, they have changed the approach to working with data from distributed server, when information is processed on users' workstations: “VDI technology is especially important for business continuity as it secures data access and ensures remote work. This technology provides the future of user jobs and remote work."
Ivan Gafich, DTEK Oil&Gas Director for Exploration and Prospective Development stressed: “Through the virtual server we managed not only to fully implement the full cycle of remote data work and use specialized software, but also achieve significant flexibility of the workflow, accelerate interaction between teams and increase productivity. As a result, even in the conditions of lockdown there are no restrictions for 3D-modeling of fields and the analysis of results allowing geologists and developers of fields to work to the full extent.“
Further, the virtual server project will be extended for other DTEK Oil&Gas divisions within the MODUS digital transformation program and its Digital Field direction.
"Current digital transformation is a necessary step for the efficiency and competitiveness of an enterprise in the global digital economy. Since 2018, we have been working on the integrated transformation of all areas of DTEK's activities. Within the Digital Field, we expect to implement the best technologies to improve the quality of field development strategy, support the optimal mode of operation of wells, the reliability of the systems," Dmytro Osyka, Head of Information and Digital Technologies and MODUS Digital Transformation Program at DTEK.
